Have you ever been so afraid that you closed your eyes, wrapped your arms around your head and waited for the thing scaring you to pass? When I was in Ethiopia, Africa in 2000, I had the dubious honour of being caught in a sand devil. What’s a sand devil you ask? A sand devil is like a tornado of sand; something like a dust devil but much bigger. I was working in a tent on a mountain plateau when the sand devil hit. Before I knew it, I couldn’t see because of flying sand and all I could hear was smashing tables, flying equipment and the ripping and rattling of canvas. I wrapped my arms around my head and waited for something flying to hit me. We had no warning and I was told later that the sand devil just appeared over our camp and wreaked havoc. I wasn’t a practicing Christian at the time but I’ll tell you, I sure was praying for protection that day! And you know what happened? Absolutely nothing! I believe the Lord heard my prayer and protected me.
In our bible study tonight, we listened to a worship song titled, “Be Still”. One of the lines in the song said, “I will be still and know You are God.” Well, I was very still on that day in the middle of the sand devil, and I prayed to the One that I knew who could save me. The bible talks about us being in the shelter of the Most High and finding refuge from the things that could harm us. Psalms 91:1-2 (NIV) says:
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
Later on in Psalms 91:4 (NIV), we’re told that:
“He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge…”
I love the word picture of finding shelter under His wings. Certainly in my case, God spread His protective wings over my head to shelter me from harm.
Child of God, when you are afraid or feel threatened, don’t turn your eyes inwards to your own resources or to things of this world for help and protection. Look for your help and protection in the shelter of your Heavenly Father. He loves you and no matter where you are, you are never out of His reach. Don’t worry about what you’re going to do – turn the situation over to your Lord and Saviour and be amazed at how He will save you.
