I just realized something about a man that I talked to the other day. Throughout our whole conversation, he didn’t gossip about anyone. Amazing! The most amazing thing I realized is that this man is not a Christian! He was very pleasant to talk to.
Now, why can’t the majority of Christians be like this man is? From what he was telling me about his work and life, there were many people that he could have gossiped to me about. You could say that he just wanted to make a good impression on me. No, I’ve known this man for awhile and I’ve never heard him gossip about anyone.
Gossip can destroy peoples lives and divide a church. Yet, you will usually find gossips in a church. Why is that? Even though there are many verses in the bible about not gossiping or slandering another, some don’t listen. The bible tells us to speak encouraging words to one another, to lift one another up when the other is in trouble or needs a helping hand. Listen to what Ephesians 4:29 (NIV) says:
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Unwholesome talk tears someone down, or belittles them, or humiliates them. This is not how we are to speak about others as Christians. Gossiping is not showing God’s love to others. When you hear of someone who is in trouble, don’t talk to others about them but go to them with God’s love in your heart. Listen to their story and if you can help, then help! If not, pray with them and let them know that they have a sister or brother that loves them with the love of Christ Jesus.
Child of God, love others as God loves you! Don’t just be a reader of what the bible says, but be a doer of God’s word. By encouraging others you are also encouraging yourself.
