When I was a young boy, I stole a chocolate bar from a pharmacy down the street from my house. This was at the bidding of my friend, Bobby. Yet, when I got home with my stolen treasure, I couldn’t eat it. I just sat looking at it as the realization of what I’d done came upon me. What to do? I believe this was the first time that guilt took ahold of me and showed me it’s face. I felt terrible. And as a young boy, I didn’t yet know how to keep what I was feeling from my face. Eventually, my father asked me what was wrong and it all just gushed out of me. He just asked me if I still had the chocolate bar and I gave it to him. He took me by the arm and marched me down to the pharmacy. When my dad told the pharmacy owner what I’d done and gave him the chocolate bar, the pharmacy owner gave me a very grave look, which made me shrink in my boots. Fortunately, he was also a merciful man, and said that as long as he had the chocolate back, he wouldn’t take any further action.

Guilt can be a terrible thing to carry around with us! Guilt will never go away unless we receive forgiveness for what we’ve done. Do you still feel guilty for some sins that you/’ve committed? If you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour you shouldn’t! His death on the cross has cleansed us of all our sins. Look at what Hebrews 10:22 says:

“Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.”

Our faith in the Lord tells us that He will forgive us when we confess our sins to Him. There’s no need to feel guilty about something that we’ve been forgiven for.

Child of God, get it into your head and your heart that when the Lord forgives you of something, you are forgiven. Once forgiven, that sin is thrown into the deepest ocean and forgotten. Don’t start throwing in your net to drag it to the surface again!
