The world is a dysfunctional place and so is the body of Christ – the church! Does this statement sound too harsh? I listened to a charismatic Catholic priest talk about unity within God’s church. What he said challenged the way I felt about the different church denominations. He used the following two verses as the basis for his statement. John 17:20-21 says:

“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.  I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one — as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.”

So, what are these verses saying? The basic message is, “As you and I are one Father, so must Our children be one with us. If all the non-believers see is division and quarrelling in the church, why would they want to be one with us?”

Within each church and within the body of Christ as a whole, we have to be of one mind according to the love of God for us! How can we testify and witness to people when we are arguing over petty differences in our respective denominations?! God’s message of love cannot just be in our minds but must be in our hearts as well. Because out of the heart the mouth speaks!

Child of God, take God’s message of love into your heart and ask the Holy Spirit to point out what pushes us away from others within the church. Meditate on God’s love today and how you can show that love to someone else. Be a true ambassador of God to the world, and walk in His love. Try to see the good in someone else instead of what you don’t like or what offends you. And to be sure, I will be right along side of you as I too, try to show God’s love to the world.
