How many times have we seen fights and arguments start when someone speaks rashly? I’ve lost count! When we are provoked by someone or startled, we react instead of respond. When we react, our basic human nature, our souls, takes over. When we respond, I think that we respond with our spirit.
When I was reading the bible this morning, I was in Proverbs. When I read Proverbs 13:3 (NIV), I felt it was something that I wanted to share with you:
“Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.”
I have seen so many verses in the bible that talk about guarding our tongues, and not replying in angerthat it finally got through to me. My old nature was always to react to what was said to me. When we guard our lips or tongues, it means that we are careful how we respond to people. Today, we don’t know how people will react to what we say or do. If we talk rashly to an unknown person on the street, we may very well be putting our lives in danger. However, if we respond with the love of God, I think that we can change a confrontational person’s actions.
Child of God, are you careful of how you talk to people? I believe that if we respond with the love of God in our voices, that we can change people and situations. Sometimes, this is very hard when someone pushes our buttons, but try to respond and not react. You will not only honour yourself but you will also honour God.
