Have you ever met someone who was cold or openly hostile towards you? I think that we all have to one extent or another. What did you do in that situation? Did you respond to the other person with hostility as well or did you back off? I don’t think that God wants us to do either. Look at Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

I think that God wants us to meet the challenge but in a loving way. How do you do that you ask? We can show love in the face of adversity and not be aggressive. Why? Because in so many verses in the bible, God always promises to not only be with us, but to go before us. I have found that if I am confronted by an angry or aggressive person, that responding in a calm and pleasant voice will change the atmosphere. If you respond in this way, the person will usually start to calm down. From the world’s point of view, this could be seen as weakness and would leave the aggressor free to continue. Yet, to me as a child of God, I can respond with the knowledge and assurance that my Lord and Saviour is with me. If we respond in a negative or hostile way, I believe that we go outside of God’s will for us, and we leave ourselves open to a potentially disastrous situation. If we respond with God’s love, then we are in God’s will and God will be with us.

Child of God, how do you respond to negative or hostile people? Do you respond word for word in anger and hostility? Or do you try to diffuse the situation with a calm approach with love? In most cases, a calm and non-offensive approach will calm the other person down. So, start now to think of how you’ll respond to an offensive or rude person the next time they cross your path. Stay in the will of God and be an example of how to respond to people living in a fallen world.
