When I was younger and had drifted away from the Lord, I was a soldier. I had been involved with the military since I was 13 years old. I loved everything military and consequently, loved watching and listening to music and movies that were violent. This was my lifestyle for many, many years. Why was I like this? Because I had been bullied as a teenager, and the violent movies and music were a way to let out my frustration. This frustration led to a desire to be able to “get even” with those who caused injustice in the world.

I don’t think it’s wrong to hate injustice – the world today is full of it. However, the violent undertones of this desire are not consistent with the Word of God. 3 John 1:11 (NKJV) tells us:

“Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.”

What I realize now is that my old lifestyle gave me a mindset that was intolerant, judgemental and at times, unkind to say the least. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit has shown me the errors of my old lifestyle and is changing the way that I think of others. But old habits die hard and this is a battle that I could never win if not for having the Holy Spirit in my life.

Child of God, be careful of what you watch and listen to in today’s world. While the world speaks of being tolerant and open to diverse lifestyles, there is a serious undertone of things that are the exact opposite of how our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ wants us to live. Satan, the Prince of the power of the air, fills the air with things that are not of God (Ephesians 2:2). Many people, even God’s children, are having their minds polluted with the things that they hear and see. If you desire peace and contentment in your life, fill your mind with the things of God. Live your life AS a child of God, being the light that is set on a hill in a dark world.
