When you see someone fall or be in need in some way, what is your first thought? Is it to help the person or to start looking at the sky, store front or your cell phone and continue walking? If you are a Christian and keep walking, you are not following God’s command to love Him and your neighbour. We must be careful to not become self-centered. Galatians 6:10 (NIV) tells us:
“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
I don’t see too many people helping others these days. I believe that as faith without deeds is dead, so love without deeds is dead. Just saying that you love everyone is not enough. We must show that love to everyone so that our deeds of love reap the fruit of God’s love. When we help someone else, we are shining the light of God’s love not only to the person that we are helping but to those near by as well. However, be careful that the love you show is from your heart and not just to be seen as a good person by others. You can fool people but you can’t fool God – He knows our hearts!
When you have the chance, help others. What seems like a small thing to us may be the rope that a person in need is crying for. Let’s look past ourselves and be true children of God by shining the light of God’s love to a dark and cold world.
