I want to talk to you today about my old car and how afraid of it I was. It was old and constantly breaking down. Trips to the garage were costing me a fortune and causing relational problems between myself and my wife. It had so much rust that I was afraid to let anyone sit in the front passenger seat for fear of the seat falling through the floorboards! I think that fear is the number 1 killer in society today. I don’t know how the non-believers in God survive – they have no hope of salvation or help. Many go to seek professional help with their fears but few have any real relief. Even Christians are prone to fear – including myself. But we are not alone.
We know that God loves us…He sent His Son, Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. Our Lord and Saviour is not angry at us as many people believe. He doesn’t punish us when we sin. No, usually we’re pretty good at punishing ourselves when we are convicted of sinning. And that is all the opening that Satan needs. Fear feeds on itself. Did you know that? When we listen to what the world tells us, or to what other people tell us about our problems, our fear increases. And Satan is always there to stoke the fire. However, as Christians, we have a Heavenly Father that we can turn to. If we are able to give the problem to our loving Father, and not take the fear back by continuing to worry about it, we can experience joy. Do I still get afraid? Yes, of course I do. But I don’t hold it inside anymore and worry myself sick about it. I turn and give the whole problem to the Lord. Is this easy? No, it isn’t. But, Our Lord and Saviour has made many promises in the bible to not fear. He tells us what to do with our fears – he gives explicit instructions on what to do. I think the scriptures saved my sanity. Here are some that I used to break the bondage of fear in my life. Look at what Isaiah 41:10 (NLT) says:
Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
Don’t be afraid or discouraged because God’s Spirit lives in His children! He will strengthen us if we let Him! When we feel like giving up, He hold us up with His victorious hand! Ephesians 4:6-7 (NLT) tells us what to do to overcome our fears:
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
Whenever you are tempted to fear or to worry, pray. Speak to God and thank Him for what He has done and what He is about to do in your life. When you are able to do this, you will feel an unbelievable peace. Why? Because believing in the Creator of heaven and the earth will allow us to be at peace because of the knowledge that our loving Heavenly Father can handle any problem.
In closing, fear isn’t fun. It can turn our lives into a nightmare. But as a child of God, you can go to your Father in heaven and tell Him how you feel and ask Him for His help. Go to Him and don’t be afraid to leave your problem with Him. You’ll be happy that you did.
