Harold The Angel Monologue
By David Hibbert – Christmas 201

Hi! I’m Harold, Harold the angel! You’ve never heard of me? Haven’t you heard my song?

“Hark now Harold the angel sings, I’ve gotta get me a new pair of wings.
I wore them out, flyin’ around, helpin’ all you humans on the ground.
I wish you’d understand one thing, you all need Jesus as your King.
I know you try to do your best, but that won’t get you any rest.
Until Christ comes in you to stay, make Him your Emmanuel today”

Haven’t you heard my song before? We sing that in heaven all day long. Well, at least I sing it in heaven all day long. I don’t know why the other angels don’t sign it. …. Oh, now I remember, God said earth wasn’t ready for my song yet. He said he was going to give it to earth right after something called the rapture. He said anyone left would have to listen to it. Not sure what He meant by that.

Anyway, I want to tell you my story.

You see, for thousands of years, I was a messenger angel. But we were all pretty bored. Why were we bored? Because no one was seeking God, and so there was no one for us to be sent to.

So what did we do? We spent much of our time just sitting around and telling angel jokes.

You know, like “Knock-knock”. “Who’s there?” “Boo.” “Boo-who?” “Boo-who! Are you sad? Do you need us to send you an angel of encouragement?”

How about “Why did the angel have to quit their job? Harp failure!”

Or, “Why can angels fly? Because they always take themselves so lightly.”

Well, as you can see, after a few thousand years, angel jokes aren’t so funny anymore.

Anyway, so God put all of us messenger angels on snowflake making duty. And it’s not as easy as it sounds. You see, God commanded that every single snowflake had to be completely different, special and unique. Just like each one of you!

So one day, as we were sitting around making snowflakes, Gabriel the arch-angel came to us and said, “Come with me, all of you, we have some very important news to deliver!” And we all thought, “What kind of news would this be, if it was so important that Gabriel, one of the three arch-angels was being sent to deliver it?” And so we were all so excited, because we got to go with Gabriel the arch-angel to deliver this very important news.

So as we all flew down to earth, Gabriel told us to stay hidden until he called us. So as we hid behind a bunch of clouds, we saw Gabriel appear to a little group of shepherds! And we all thought, “What?” “This special message wasn’t for a king, or a high priest, but for a bunch of uneducated shepherds! How weird was that?

And as Gabriel appeared to the shepherds, God’s glory shone all around the shepherds, and boy, were they ever afraid. And then we all heard these woodpeckers, or at least we thought it was wood peckers. But the angel Bob said “That’s not woodpeckers! That’s the shepherds knees knocking together, because they were so afraid, and we could hear them way up in the clouds.

But then Gabriel said to them, “Don’t be afraid.” And we all thought, “Ya, that will work.” But then He said, “I bring you good news of great joy for all the people.”

And then he said it – I remember those words as if he spoken them yesterday! He said, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you: He is Christ the Lord.”

And when we angels heard those words we all got so excited, because God had finally done it! We had known for so long, that one day God was going to send Christ to the earth, to bring about the redemption of mankind, but we had no idea when or how He was going to do it. And we were getting pretty frustrated because it was taking so long. But God’s timing is always perfect. And so now it was happening!

And we discovered that God was going to send Christ to earth in the form of a human baby, who would be found wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. “Why not in a castle, or in a palace, or at least a 5 star hotel?” we all asked, for this was the King of Kings, and Lord of lords. And we marveled at the wisdom of God.

And just then we were all told by Gabriel to reveal ourselves to the shepherds, and so we all suddenly appeared. And I snuck right up to the right side of Gabriel, right in the front row, where the shepherds could all see me.

And I was just about to sing them my song. But then all the rest of the angels started praising God for His love for mankind, and we all said, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, good will to men.” And for a few minutes the sky lit up with the glory of God, and we kept saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, good will to men.”

And we were so envious for all of mankind. You see, only humans can experience salvation. Only humans can be cleansed of their sins by the blood of Jesus. And only humans can have the Spirit of God indwelling them. And so we were all so envious of humans, that now was the moment that salvation was being offered to mankind, wrapped up in that little baby Jesus.

We will never forget that moment, when we were given the privilege to announce that salvation had come to earth.

But we were also very sad, because we would never be able to do it again. You see, once salvation was given to men, angels no longer have the message of salvation. That job has been given to you – God’s sons and daughters to share.

So I’m no longer a messenger angel.

But I do have a new job. Now I’m a guardian angel, and boy, it’s a full time job, and I am very, very busy. You see, I’ve been assigned to guard a Pastor in ___________, and boy, is he ever a handful! … Oh, there he goes again!!! Sorry, I gotta go!

Remember … be the messenger!
