Part 24 – How Can We Live The Christian Life?

What Is The Secret To The Christian Life?

How are we to live the Christian Life? What is the secret? What do we need to do?

Pray? … “(7) And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.” (Matthew 6:7, NIV). More praying is not the secret.

Read the Bible? … “You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” (John 5:39-40, NIV). Reading the Bible is not the secret.

Go to Church? … “For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20, NIV). You don’t need to “go to church” to have Christ’s presence.

Witness? … “And how can they preach unless they are sent?” (Romans 10:15, NIV). If you witness, but you are not led by the Spirit of God, you won’t be fruitful anyway.

Tithe? … “When Jesus heard this, he said to him, ‘You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.’” (Luke 18:22, NIV). Is Jesus suggesting that giving to the poor might be more important than giving to God?

Speak in Tongues? … “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” (1 Corinthians 13:1, NIV). Obviously tongues in not the secret to the Christian Life.

Believe A Certain Doctrine? Maybe water baptism by immersion In the Name of Jesus? What about baptism in the Holy Spirit? Perhaps eternal Salvation? Or maybe the pre-millennial, pre-tribulation return of Christ? … “… faith without deeds is dead.” (James 2:26). No amount of belief or faith is sufficient if it doesn’t result in life change.

Here’s the bigger question: Is it really possible for us to live the Christian Life?

And here’s the surprising answer. No! It is not possible for us to live the Christian Life. In the previous list, we are the centre, we are in control of everything we do. Success or failure depends on us, and we live as if we have no need of the new life form within us. To live the Christian life, we must move from the centre, we must reposition ourselves so we are no longer at the centre.
